The National Weather Service in Springfield, Missouri, is forecasting severe winter weather in Rolla and surrounding areas in the coming days. Employees and students are expected to exercise judgment when deciding if they can travel safely to campus. Everyone’s circumstances will be different; therefore, it’s important that supervisors and instructors hold conversations to determine what options exist for their teams or classes in the event they cannot make it to campus.

Friday, Jan. 12
Missouri S&T is planning to follow normal operations. The forecast calls for snow in the afternoon and dropping temperatures into the evening. Please use caution when outdoors or traveling.
In order for students, faculty and staff to better prepare for the first day of classes, university leaders will announce by 4 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 12) the plans for the first day of classes – if the university will transition to remote operations (including online classes) on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Saturday, Jan. 13
The residential halls will be open to students who have made arrangements to move in on Saturday. The Student Recreation Center and Student Fitness Center will be open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Some dining services will be available; TJ’s dining hall will be open 5-7 p.m. and Burger 573 in the Havener Center food court will be open 5-7 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 14
The residential halls will be open. The Student Recreation Center and Student Fitness Center will be open 1-8 p.m. Some dining services will be available; TJ’s dining hall will be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., Burger 573 in the Havener Center food court will be open 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., and Einstein Bros. Bagels will be open 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Havener Center. The S&T Store will be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Monday, Jan. 15
The university will observe the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday (no classes and paid holiday for benefit-eligible employees). The Student Recreation Center and Student Fitness Center will be closed.
Some dining services will be available; TJ’s dining hall will be open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., Burger 573 in the Havener Center food court will be open 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m., and Einstein Bros. Bagels will be open 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Havener Center. The S&T Store will be open 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Tuesday, Jan. 16
Leaders are monitoring the weather and will make a decision by 4 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 12, about whether to transition to remote operations with online classes.
As a reminder, employees fall into four categories during an inclement weather event, and should discuss arrangements with their supervisor. The four categories are:
- Those who will telework from home or another location.
- Those who cannot carry out their duties through telework during a shift to remote operations and who are instructed that they are not required on site to work will be compensated.
- Those who are required to telework and choose not to must take paid time off.
- Those who are required to work on-site and do not report to work may need to take unpaid leave or, with supervisory approval, may use paid time off.
