Whenever possible, Missouri S&T will stay open for business and on-campus instructional activities. Employees and students are expected to exercise judgment when deciding if they can travel safely to campus. Everyone’s circumstance will be different; therefore, it’s important that supervisors and instructors hold conversations to determine what options exist for their teams or classes in the event they cannot make it to campus.
During inclement weather events that affect normal operations, the university will shift to remote operations and learning to reduce interruptions.
This means faculty who have scheduled classes on days when S&T transitions to remote operations will be expected to engage their classes in remote learning. The format of this learning is up to the discretion of the faculty member (for example, holding a synchronous Zoom class meeting or assigning readings or other assignments to be completed asynchronously). Instructors should communicate expectations with their students.
Staff required to work on-site will be notified by their department. Staff who are not required to work on-site are expected to work from home or another off-campus location, if possible. Supervisors are responsible for coordinating alternative work plans with their employees.
Under severe weather conditions, university officials may open campus late, close campus early, or close campus and office buildings for an entire day. Even if campus is not open, classes and work will continue to ensure that students can make academic progress and university services are available.
If you must be on campus during a shift to remote operations, please use caution, wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear, and follow the campus snow and ice removal priority walking routes noted on this map.
Employees fall into four categories during an inclement weather event:
- Those who will telework from home or another location.
- Those who cannot carry out their duties through telework during a shift to remote operations and who are instructed that they are not required on site to work will be compensated.
- Those who are required to telework and choose not to must take paid time off — before Jan. 1, 2024, either as personal or vacation days, and after Jan. 1, as PTO, personal or vacation days.
- Those who are required to work on-site and do not report to work may need to take unpaid leave or, with supervisory approval, may use paid time off.
If there is a change in campus status due to severe weather, the university will:
- Issue a text message to all registered cellphone numbers and an email to the campus community.
- Post information to this website, the S&T Alert site.
- Post information to S&T’s social media channels.
- Inform local media outlets.
- Strive to provide campus status by 6 a.m. on weather-affected weekdays.
If you do not receive emergency messages from the university, sign up for S&T text and phone alerts. A text message is the fastest way to receive alerts about emergencies and campus closings. University Police is operational 24/7 and can be reached at 573-341-4300.
Dining options on campus, operated by the S&T Dining Services, will be available. Due to staffing, some dining service locations may close. For up-to-date operations of dining services, visit S&T’s dining services website.
