Interim Chancellor Christopher G. Maples sent the following notice to Missouri S&T students, faculty and staff this morning (Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018).
This morning, University Police notified me that anti-Semitic symbols and language were spray-painted on university property over the weekend. These repulsive, deeply offensive words and symbols stand in direct opposition to our values as a university and to our principles of mutual respect and civility. There is no place at Missouri S&T for such bigotry and hatred. We are investigating this incident and encourage anyone who has information regarding this incident to contact University Police at 573-341-4300 or email police@mst.edu.
We are in the education business, and that education extends beyond our classrooms. We are entrusted by parents, families, and society to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students. We adamantly support freedom of expression by our students, faculty and staff. And we will always foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports the student experience and learning. As a university community, we must – each one of us – uphold the principles of inclusion, respect, and civility to ensure our students can learn, live, and thrive at Missouri S&T.
I encourage any member of our university community in need assistance to contact our Counseling Services staff, our University Police department, which is available 24/7, and our Miner Wellness program, which provides resources for you to learn well, be well, and stay well.
Finally, remember that if you ever witness or experience hostile, intimidating, threatening, or harassing behavior, you have support here at Missouri S&T. I encourage you to file a report online. You can do so anonymously, if you wish.
